Chicken Cafreal is a typical Goan recipe. This recipe is an outcome Portuguese influence on the Goan cuisine. It makes for an excellent appetiser or a dry side dish. This recipe is sour, spicy and tangy on the palate and is a beautiful diversion from the usual chicken recipes. It is best for dinner on rainy evenings and a fun dish to explore from the myriad of indigenous chicken meals. Also, it uses basic pantry ingredients and extremely easy to make. Serves 6-8
1kg chicken, medium cut, washed
1 tbsp turmeric powder
Salt to taste
4 tbsp oil
2 cups coriander leaves
1/2 onion
12 green chillies
1 inch cinnamon stick
1 tbsp black peppercorns
1/2 tsp cloves
1 bay leaf
1 tsp cumin seeds
2 tsp poppy seeds
1 lemon, juiced
2 inch ginger
10 cloves garlic
1/2 cup water or as required
2 large potatoes, sliced
2 tbsp oil
2-3 lemon slices
2 red chillies, sliced

Step 1: Grind coriander leaves, onion, green chillies, cinnamon, black peppercorns, cloves, bay leaf, cumin seeds, poppy seeds, lemon juice, ginger, garlic into a fine paste.
Step 2: Add turmeric and salt to this paste in Step 1. Marinade the chicken with this new mixture for at least 30 minutes.
Step 3: In a pan, add 4 tbsp of oil and fry the chicken till it is cooked and roasted. Add little water to avoid burning. The gravy should be a thick coating over the roasted chicken. Check and adjust seasoning.
Step 4: In another pan, heat 2 tbsp oil and fry the the sliced potatoes till they are cooked and turn golden-brown in colour. Sprinkle some salt to taste.
Step 5: Serve the chicken with potato slices sprinkled with coriander leaves, red chillies, and lemon wedges!
